Hey guys, So I've been playing Diablo 3 for the past week and got through the game already with no lock ups. TF2 and other games run flawless as well. The nights I've played Diablo 3 were in 4 hour stretches. Recently, I was grinding in a very intense area (a ton of processing power needed) and after about an hour or so my screen froze. Checked my card and definitely was hot to the touch. Verified same thing again with a second freeze.

Screen just locks and no response from system. Wondering if anyone else is having a problem with these?

I found online on Toms Hardware that XFX on this model recommended that in North America customers can reapply thermal paste to alleviate the issue and will not void the warranty. I really don't want to do this since card is brand new, but I don't know if getting another card will help it. I for one am a little shocked at this.

The system normally runs very cool just running normal tasks and functions and the GPU core temp is 36 degrees stock running OS. Its got plenty of air in the Corsair 600t case and system is VERY cool internally (AC of room is 74). CPU cores are 31 to 33 degrees as well. CPU fan is cool to the touch when inspecting right after freeze.

Should I consider new video card exchange it paste it myself (will that really help)? HWMONITOR UPDATE After 10 minutes of 5 to 10 minutes, card spiked up to 65 and was very hot on bottom of card (could touch for no more than 3 seconds without wanting to take your fingers off). The card does freeze. I narrowed it down to the card. I pin pointed it's Diablo 3 and no other games that I've tried running against the card.

Just because a card can go to a certain temp does not mean it's normal for it to overheat. 6870 is a recommended card and Diablo 3 is one of the #1 games being played on these systems. I would think that maybe other people might be interested in this information in case they get the same issue or if they don't then I have a faulty card. Blizzard also just released specific tweaks for Mac performance on this game, and no problems were found before that. Seems like more than just.

However as mentioned, normal for the card.

My Sapphire 6870 gets to about 65'C shortly after starting D3 sessions. And yes, I have had the freezes as well. Not a temperature or GFX problem. I had it narrowed the problem down to possibly a) unstable OC (which is odd because I can run Prime95 OS X for hours), or b) it's just Diablo 3 itself. I don't have D3 on W7, but DX11 games that task the GPU (Resident Evil ORC, Deus Ex, Skyrim) never freeze my system.

Update (Also a HUGE thanks for all the amazing replies guys, it means a lot honest) Alright, I actually contacted XFX who recommends to replace the thermal paste, which I did not want to do as it's usually only a possible chance it will fix it. Or I can RMA for another card. I turned on my system today and ran the game for an hour to an hour and a half. Fan on the card did start up and cold started @ 35, turned on game and jumped to 45, then game play at 51, and topped at 69 70 Now I couldn't get it past that temp this time and when I finished the game, I actually saw the card cool down to 41 within 2 minutes. No crashes this time and fan dropped down. The symptoms of this definitely point to Graphics Card as there is no indicators in console log (which means sudden system crash) and I had the good ol' fashioned 8800 (king of Mac overheats) lol.

As for someone else getting crashes, it's nice to see someone else and not just me. Just a hard screen lock usually points to over heated cards. But temps do match everyone else's. So, my questions are: 1.could there have been any software issues known with Hackintoshes that could've caused the GPU fan to not kick on possibly? Or possibly just an issue with the fans on the card. Should I still send back the card for service just in case? Or chalk it up to just a one time occurrence?

I got an Arctic Freeze for my 4850 and wow what a difference in heat and sound. Just remember the more powerful (and faster) the GPU, the hotter it will run, regardless of AMD vs nVidia. Does the drive show up after the Mac is up and running? I can unplug the drive without the stand are warning (the drive was ejected. Blah) and plug it back in to the USB port and then it's seen. My issue is a but different as I'm using it as a Time Machine drive and it's formatted OS X Journaled but I opened a case with Seagate and they are looking at the Macbook / OS X as being the problem.

After going through all the usually troubleshooting: reset PRAM, reboot iMac, reboot external GoFlex drive, disk utility - repair, even reformatted the drive and sacrificed two years worth of backup data. All did nothing to make the drive writeable. Drive was readable and was able to copy files off of it prior to reformatting.
