Vulkan

The specification for the long awaited Vulkan graphics API has now been released by Khronos. An SDK by LunarG has also been released which contains validation and debugging tools for Vulkan applications. Quite a lot of people have been waiting excitedly for the Vulkan spec to come out and there has been a lot of hype surrounding the new API.

Vulkan has been designed to be a high-performance low-level API which can take advantage of modern multicore processors far better than OpenGL. We will have to see how much this new approach affects real life performance once we have drivers with Vulkan support and games that utilize this new API, hopefully we'll get that soon. AMD have also released a video explaining how Vulkan works in a nutshell.

I've become curious about one thing: if Vulkan provides such a low level access to hardware, what will happen if an app (a game usually) starts to misbehave? I read Vulkan has very little validation in favor of speed. Does that mean that a buggy game could crash the entire Xorg or freeze the driver? A user-space segfault usually leads to crashing the program but not the entire system (and Xorg/desktop for many people is the system), but if invalid data goes into the kernel space or the Xorg driver and crashes there because of that. I suppose it would be bad. Kernel panic for the module and Xorg crash in case of the Xorg driver.

The popular Cross platform 3D graphics and compute API Vulkan will now work on Apple’s iOS and macOS platforms. The Khronos Group portability initiative, Vulkan apps may now may be ported to iOS devices and macs. Khronos members Valve, LunarG and The Brenwill workshop worked to make this possible using a collection of free and open source tools, SDKs and runtime libraries. The initiative goal has been designed to run at native performance levels over metal and DirectX 12 drivers.

By using Dota 2, the group was able to achieve “significantly higher performance” than older native openGL drivers. According to Neil Trevett, VP NVIDIA and Khronos Group President: Running Vulkan applications on Apple Platform has been the number one request from developers and today’s release of the MoltenVK runtime and LunarG macOS SDK brings that capability to life. Developers are invited to download the open source Vulkan Portability tools today and provide feedback via Vulkan Ecosystem GitHub issue. The Vulkan portability initiative will continue to strengthen the infrastructure and tooling around bringing Vulkan capabilities to multiple metal and DX12 platforms- our long term goal is to enable portable Vulkan code to be executed on any platform that developers care about. The Open Source LunarG Vulkan SDK for macOS is also available today on LunarXchange, enabling developers to build, run and debug Vulkan applications on Mac. Going forward, LunarG plans to continue to evolve its MAC SDK to add additional tools and features.

Supremo alternatives for macos. You only need to install the app if you want to use the unattended remote access feature. On the next screen, you basically get the option to either create a meeting or access other’s screen. If you creating a meeting, it basically means that you will showcase your screens to others, while remote accessing other’s screen is exactly what it sounds like.
