Eventually, Varun and Katherine realized that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Varun coordinated with Katherine's parents to use Katherine's maternal grandmother's diamond in the engagement ring, but he designed the ring to match Katherine's unique and modern style.
Varun incorporated Sri Lankan (where Varun's mom is from) sapphires and Tanzanian (where Varun's dad is from) diamonds in the final design. Varun wanted to surprise Katherine with a proposal at the location of their first date, Meridian Hill Park. However, the couple no longer lived as close to the park, and Varun needed to come up with a good excuse to get Katherine to go there without being suspicious. Varun tried to schedule a hill sprint workout before work on the morning of March 9, 2017 (which is something these two crazy lovebirds would regularly do) since the park is located on one of the steepest hills in Washington DC. But Katherine happened to get a minor injury a few days before the date, which foiled Varun's original plan.
Varun thought he smoothly convinced Katherine that instead they should just go to toss a frisbee at Meridian Hill Park (even though there were several parks between their house and that park). Afterwards, Varun found out that Katherine had her suspicions. Regardless, the morning of March 9, the two went to Meridian Hill Park and threw a disc while Varun also did a mini-workout (to try and throw her off the scent). After about 30 minutes, Varun switched discs to a Grit (Katherine's team in DC) disc with the proposal written on the underside and pulled out the ring. He threw an upside-down throw so that Katherine would read the message (though he thinks she didn't) and walked to her and got down on one knee and proposed to Katherine. She said YES! The couple received applause from a workout group from the side (who fortuitously managed to snag a picture of the proposal)!
Afterwards, Katherine and Varun were overjoyed and grabbed a coffee nearby, starting to let people know about the exciting news. And they finished the celebration by going out for a delicious meal that evening after work. Though, the real celebration started a couple weeks after, when we went on a trip to London, Belgium and Sri Lanka as a whirlwind engagement trip to introduce Katherine to Varun's side of the family. We had an engagement party with Varun's dad's side of the family in London. Varun's paternal grandfather was very excited to meet Katherine and they got along swimmingly.
From there we went to Sri Lanka to have an extravagant engagement part in Sri Lanka with Varun's mom's side of the family (organized by Varun's Aunts there). It was an amazing affair and Katherine got all dressed up in traditional Sri Lankan garb. Katherine got to meet Varun's maternal grandmother and, again, Katherine was her charming self and they got along well. We had a wonderful time and even had some time to do some sightseeing. We wanted to thank everyone who came to these ceremonies and, especially, to those that organized it! BUT THERE'S MORE! Katherine's parents also organized an engagement party in Cincinnati for Varun to meet more of Katherine's side of the family.
Katherine's parents put together an elegant event for us in their beautiful backyard and house with Varun's immediate family joining as well. It was another successful party giving us all a chance to celebrate together and Varun had the opportunity to mingle with Katherine's family. Again, we want to thank everyone who came to this event and Katherine's parents for organizing it! Now we are excited for the culminating event, the big wedding! We are extremely excited to be celebrating with you! And can't wait for the big day!
