Foxmarks gave you an easy way to sync bookmarks across computers regardless of operating system. Happily, this wasn’t enough for the developers. Today FoxMarks is known as XMarks. It not only syncs bookmarks, but also passwords and even tabs. Most importantly, it no longer works with Firefox alone: Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer can now sync seamlessly with Firefox thanks to this plugin.

Many of you may already know and love XMarks, but seeing as it’s (surprisingly!) never been formally featured here at MakeUseOf, I thought I’d introduce the rest of you to this amazing plugin. To me, XMarks is akin to, in that it’s an application so amazingly useful you forget it’s even there and just depend on it. Getting Started The first thing you need to do is install XMarks on all of your computers and, if you’ve multiple browsers on your computers, for every browser. All right, I just thought(I know that it'll get me in trouble) that Xmarks 2.x.x was released with compatibility with Mavericks AND iCloud Sync so that it would co-operate and bring joy and happiness to all this Christmas. I thought wrong Thanks for clearing it up MaxBurn. It seems that all syncing solutions has some sort of issue with iCloud Sync. Bookmacster recommends that ones not use iCloud Sync with OS X and iOS because of issues between what Bookmacster does and what iCloud then sees. The only solution is to use a different browser on both platforms if you want changes to be directed to all internet browser software. It was much easier back in the day when iOS didn't exist and we only had different OS X browsers to deal with - then iCloud came along. I'll stop now.

Xmarks 2.0.19 Does Xmarks 2.0.19 fir Safari work ok with iCloud bookmark sync between Yosemite and iOS? I have had Xmarks for Safari turned off on my Mac ages ago, but always find the need to use my bookmarks on iOS. Previously i was thinking that Safari on my Mac was the gateway to propagate my Xmarks bookmarks to my iOS devices, but Xmarks never could play nicely with iCloud bookark sync and that is why I had to turn it off on Safari.

Since then I have not found a practical way to propagate my Xmark bookmarks to and from iOS. I am a long time Xmarks premium user. Have the extension installed on Windows and Mac and sync my bookmarks on Chrome, IE, and Chrome on the Mac. What I love of Xmarks is the versioning backups.

You can always come back to a previous bookmark set if something has gone wrong. Other sync methods I have tried don't seem to provide this backup function (Chrome sync, Firefox sync or iCloud sync for Safari). My main browser in Windows and Mac is Chrome, but Xmarks has always recommend to turn off bookmark sync on Chrome as it can mess up the Xmarks syncing process. The problem is that the iOS Xmarks app is a PITA to use. It does not integrate at all with the rest of iOS and feels like an isolate island. You can use it to view the bookmarks but it is unbelievable that in these iOS 8.2 days it still does not offer 'Open in' functionality from Safari like almost any other descent app does.

Safari integration was the best function Lastpass has got on iOS in the last couple of years (as well as Touch ID authentication), it is just so sad that they have not update the Xmarks app to offer something at least remotely similar. The issue is not so much Safari bookmarks manipulation by Xmarks, something that has never been possible. That had been fantastic of course, but the main issue is that you cannot add bookmarks to Xmarks in an easy way from Safari on iOS. If you want to do this you have do it manually using copy/paste and creating a new bookmark from the Xmarks app, totally ridiculous when an 'Open in' function should ease this process like other apps do.
